AI in Mail

Mail has four AI assists built in: Summarize thread, Suggest reply, AI Correct, and Read aloud. Each one is a single click, each one keeps you in control — AI never sends anything on your behalf.

Summarize a thread

Long thread, five minutes before a meeting? Click Summarize thread in the reading-pane toolbar. A summary card appears above the conversation with:

• a one-paragraph overview,
• key points and decisions,
• action items,
• open questions.

The summary sticks with the thread — dismiss the card and it comes back the next time you open that conversation, no need to regenerate. Click Summarize thread again after new replies arrive to refresh it.

Tip

The summary card has its own speaker button — click it to have just the summary read aloud, which is usually all you need to catch up.

Suggest a reply

When you’re replying to a thread:

1. Open the composer on the conversation.
2. Click Suggest reply.
3. Optionally give a hint about the direction — “accept and propose Tuesday”, “ask for the budget breakdown”.

A draft appears in the composer. Edit as much or as little as you like — nothing goes out until you click Send.

AI Correct

AI Correct cleans up whatever is in the composer: grammar, punctuation, run-ons, and the artifacts of speech (“um, so basically…”) if you dictated the draft. It preserves your meaning, tone, and language — it fixes your words rather than inventing new claims.

It pairs naturally with dictation: talk your reply into the mic, then click AI Correct to turn it into a clean email.

Read aloud

Click the speaker button in the reading pane to hear a message or thread. The voice skips the unspeakable parts of email — URLs become “a link at example.com”, email addresses are read naturally, and long hex IDs are summarized as “an ID”. Click the button again to stop, and playback stops automatically if you switch conversations.

Dictation

Everywhere you can type in Mail you can also talk: the microphone button in the composer streams your speech to Knobs and types the transcript for you, with a live indicator while you’re speaking. Dictation switches itself off after a long stretch of silence.

What AI sees, and what it keeps

• Suggestions and corrections are ephemeral — they exist only in your composer until you send or discard them. They aren’t stored on the server.
• Thread summaries are the one thing kept: they’re saved on the thread so they can be restored and read aloud later. Re-summarizing overwrites the old summary.
• AI reads only threads you can already read, and usage is rate-limited per workspace.
