Onboarding

Right after you create your account, a short wizard gets your workspace ready. Most teams are through it in a couple of minutes. Only one step is required: verifying a recovery contact.

Step 1 — Add a recovery contact (required)

Section titled “Step 1 — Add a recovery contact (required)”

Because your login is your knobs address — not a personal email — Knobs needs a verified way to reach you if you’re ever locked out.

  1. Enter a personal email address or phone number.
  2. Knobs sends a 6-digit code to it.
  3. Enter the code to verify.

You can’t skip this step: the rest of the product stays gated until at least one recovery contact is verified. You can add more (or swap them) later under Settings → Security. See Recovery contacts.

Your workspace already has your-team.knobs.io working end to end. Here you choose whether to also connect your own domain:

  • Stay on the subdomain — nothing to do; choose Skip. You can add a custom domain any time later from Settings → Domains.
  • Add a custom domain — enter it, and Knobs shows the DNS records to add at your registrar: a _knobs-verify TXT record to prove ownership, plus MX, DKIM, SPF, and DMARC records for mail. Each record shows a live verified/pending status with a copy button, and you can leave and come back — verification keeps checking in the background.

Skipping never loses anything: sign-up completes on the subdomain either way. The full walkthrough is in Custom domains.

Step 3 — Two-factor authentication (optional)

Section titled “Step 3 — Two-factor authentication (optional)”

You’ll be offered 2FA enrollment with either:

  • an authenticator app (scan a QR code, enter the 6-digit code), or
  • SMS codes to your phone.

You can skip this and enroll later from Settings → Security — see Account security.

You land in Mail with a working inbox at your new address. From here:

  1. Invite your team — they each get an address on your domain automatically.
  2. Explore the rail — Chat, Tasks, Docs, Sheets, Drive, and Calendar are all live from day one.
  3. Set your theme and density to taste.
