Channels

Channels are named conversations organized around a topic — #engineering, #launch-week, #random. Public channels are open to the whole workspace; private channels are visible only to their members.

  1. Click the + next to Channels in the sidebar.
  2. Name the channel and (optionally) give it a topic.
  3. Flip the Private switch if it should be invite-only, and pick the initial members.
  4. Create it — you land in the new channel, ready to post.

Public channels can be found and read by everyone in the workspace. Private channels don’t appear to non-members at all — not in the sidebar, not in search.

The topic appears in the channel header and tells people what the channel is for. Click the topic in the header to edit it in place. Any member can update it.

Open the channel’s settings from the header (click the member count or the settings control):

  • Add members to a private channel to bring them into the conversation. New members can read the channel’s history.
  • Remove members, or leave yourself.
  • Channels have member and admin roles for managing these settings.

Public channels don’t need a roster — everyone in the workspace is in.

Pins keep a channel’s essentials one click away — the running decisions list, the on-call doc, the deploy checklist.

  • Pin: hover a message and choose Pin from the hover toolbar.
  • View pins: click the pins control in the channel header — pinned messages open in the right pane.
  • Any channel member can pin and unpin; a channel holds up to 50 pins.

From channel settings you can rename a channel or archive it. An archived channel is read-only — its history stays browsable and searchable, but no new messages can be posted. You can unarchive it later if the topic comes back to life.

In the sidebar, a dot on a channel means there are messages you haven’t seen; a numbered pill counts mentions of you (and unread DMs). Opening the channel marks it read across all your devices.
